Good for you! Everyone has to find what works for them and you found the perfect formula. Diabetes is very complex and each person needs to find the right fit. I like the approach of setting small goals and using the S.M.A.R.T. Goal formula. If you are unfamiliar with S.M.A.R.T. Goals, here is a quick definition:

SMART goals help individuals with diabetes set clear, measurable, and achievable objectives to manage blood sugar, improve lifestyle habits, and prevent complications.

      What Are SMART Goals?

SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Applying this framework to diabetes management ensures goals are clear, realistic, and trackable:

      • Specific: Clearly define the objective, such as lowering A1C or increasing physical activity. For example, “Reduce A1C by 1% over three months through diet and exercise”
      • Measurable: Include quantifiable criteria to track progress, like monitoring blood glucose levels daily or recording exercise sessions
      • Achievable: Set realistic goals based on current health, lifestyle, and resources. For instance, starting with 30 minutes of walking three times a week is attainable for most beginners
      • Relevant: Ensure the goal aligns with overall diabetes management, such as adopting a low glycemic index diet to control blood sugar
      • Time-bound: Establish a deadline to foster accountability, like losing 5% of body weight within three months

Examples of SMART Goals for Diabetes

      1. Monitor Glucose Levels: “I will check my blood glucose three times daily for the next four months and log the results to review with my doctor”
      2. Exercise Regularly: “I will walk for 30 minutes, four times a week, and track my sessions to maintain steady blood sugar levels”
      3. Medication Adherence: “I will take my prescribed diabetes medications every morning and evening for the next three months and record each dose in a log”
      4. Dietary Changes: “I will include at least two servings of vegetables in each meal for the next six weeks to improve blood sugar control”
